Six Year Celebration and Giveaway!

six-candlesToday marks the six year anniversary of when I published my first major work, Unspeakable Words. I’d submitted the story on a whim to Dreamspinner Press, and had been completely gobsmacked when they accepted it. In fact, I almost snatched it back. I couldn’t believe anyone would want to publish one of my stories! Now, six years later, a quick check on Goodreads says I have 18 works out there–kind of amazing when I consider myself a slow writer. You know, that pesky FT job gets in the way at times. 🙂

By the way, everything is 30% off at Dreamspinner until the end of today!

I’d planned a big celebration, in part because I totally forgot to celebrate the fifth anniversary last year. I confess, I don’t feel much like celebrating right now. I’ve been stunned and horrified by the results of this past election. For about 48 hours, I seriously considered giving up writing because it seemed like a frivolous use of my time in the increasingly hostile and dangerous environment in this country. With the encouragement of friends, and the sound advice of mentors, I decided now, more than ever, we need our storytellers.

But I still didn’t feel much like celebrating.

Yet the sentiments I expressed in that post are meaningless if we don’t take pleasure, peace, and comfort where we can find them. Switching off the news to watch kittens play doesn’t mean you aren’t outraged at what’s happening in this country, or terrified for what it means for you and your loved ones. It means you can’t hold sustained fear in your heart, and you need a break from it. If you follow me on Twitter (where I am far more political than anywhere else) you’ll note that my tweets have been flip-flopping between frothing-mad post-election commentary and, well, puppies and kittens. I promise you, I’m not schizophrenic, nor is a saner someone wresting my Twitter account away from me at times.

It’s that now that the shock, grief, and terror have stopped boiling over and are simmering in the background, I have to take stock of my life and plan for what the future will bring. Where to put my time and money. How to not just manage my fear, but harness it. And part of that means celebrating the little things, and continuing to be grateful for what I have.

Such as a cat who tolerantly allows me to dress it in a lobster costume for Halloween.

shrimp-cat-2-halloween-2016Hence, a smaller-than-planned celebration, but a party just the same. For the next seven days, I’m holding a contest here on the website. If you want to play, then post something that makes you happy: a photo of your pets, a link to a funny meme, your favorite, upbeat song or vid on YouTube. Include your contact email, and I’ll put you in the running for your choice of one e-book from my backlist. Enjoy!

Book Tour and Giveaway: Tempting Tristan by Melissa Foster

Tempting Tristan (A Sexy Standalone M/M Romance)
Series: Harborside Nights
Author: Melissa Foster
Release Date: October 19, 2016
Tempting Tristan is a stand-alone M/M romance featuring two sexy, hot alphas.
Fresh off the heels of yet another bad relationship, Tristan Brewer is taking a break from men to try and figure out where he keeps going wrong. He knows his biggest fault–he leads with his heart, not his head–and that’s never going to change. But after several introspective weeks, he’s beginning to get a handle on things. That is, until badass heartthrob Alex Wells walks into his bar…
Alex has spent eight years in the Army, months in a hospital bed, and far too long hiding his sexual identity. He’s guilt-ridden, damaged, pissed off, and up for a Silver Star–for the incident that nearly cost him his life, and kept him from his grandmother’s funeral. But all he wants to do is forget his stint with the institution that allows but doesn’t necessarily accept, and live the life he’s always dreamed of.

The chemistry between Tristan and Alex ignites from the moment they meet, and the more time they spend together the hotter the flames become. But the closer Tristan gets, the more Alex’s walls go up, and when the two walk onto a military base, Tristan finds out Alex’s physical scars aren’t the ones that run the deepest.

HARBORSIDE NIGHTS is a sexy, hot, and evocatively real series of stand-alone romances that follows a group of friends who have known one another for years as “summer” friends, and now come together after college to build their lives. They’re tough, edgy, and accepting–most of the time. This series is written in the same loving, raw, and emotional voice readers have come to love by New York Times & USA Today bestselling, award-winning author Melissa Foster with LGBT themes.

“Melissa Foster is synonymous with sexy, swoony, heartfelt romance!” New York Times Bestseller Lauren Blakely

“With her wonderful characters and resonating emotions, Melissa Foster is a must-read author!” New York Times Bestseller J. Kenner

We step forward at the same time, and he presses his rough hand to my cheek. “I don’t know what kind of pussies you went out with before, but I wanted to fucking claim you in there.”

He slides a hand around my waist, tugging our bodies together. I feel every hard inch of him, and he’s got me so hot I’m sure we’re going to combust.
“I’ve spent almost nine years hiding who I am, and I’m not willing to do it anymore,” he says through clenched teeth. “Not here, where I came to start over. Where I came to live on my terms without the goddamn military hanging over my head.”
“I have no interest in hiding,” I assure him.
“You’re sure? Because I really want to kiss you right now, and I don’t care who sees us.”
I respond by pulling his mouth to mine, my break from men long forgotten. We stumble backward, crashing into the railing, fighting for dominance as we did yesterday morning. The passion between us has a life of its own. My hands claw over his ass, up his back. I want to strip him down and take all of him. I want to discover why he’s so rough and learn what about those shadows that are lurking behind his gorgeous eyes. Instead I take, and give, and take more of the angry kisses. When we finally tear our mouths apart, my body’s still reeling, and we both curse under our breaths.
“Okay?” he pants out.
I nod, knowing if I open my mouth, I want to fuck you, is going to come out.

“Can I ask you something? You don’t have to answer.”

Tristan shrugs. “Have at it.”

“Why were you taking a break? I get that your ex was a prick, but is there more to it?”
He looks down the street, across the street, and then his hand cruises through his hair as it has so often that I’ve already come to expect it when he’s nervous.

“Ian was a prick, but the rest is going to make me sound like a pussy,” he admits.

“I’ve only known you a day, and I already know nothing can make you sound like a pussy.”

He meets my gaze, and his jaw tightens. He lifts his chin and I recognize the struggle between feeling proud and worrying about looking weak. I fight that battle on a daily basis.
“I give away my heart too easily, and I end up getting hurt.”
His eyes never leave mine, and that trust, that confidence, is the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen.
“I was right. Nothing can make you sound like a pussy.” I slide my hand to the hard ridge of his jaw and lean in closer. “I’ve never given my heart away. That makes you braver than me.”

Rogue Soldier: Book Tour, Interview & Giveaway with Jamie Lynn Miller

rogue-soldier-banner-smallBefore we get down to business, I totally forgot that Fool’s Gold, my newest release about second chances in the exciting world of competitive sport horses, is on sale in US Amazon outlets for a limited time! The price will start creeping up slowly over time so hurry to get it at the best price possible!

But enough of me–Please welcome Jamie Lynn Miller as she joins us today to talk about her latest release, Rogue Soldier! This is book two of the Shadow Unit series, the followup to Broken Soldier.

Thanks for joining us here today, Jamie! Welcome to my blog and thank you for answering my nosy discerning, questions!  First, please tell us a little about yourself and the kinds of stories you like to write. Would you say there is an underlying theme behind your stories?

Thank you so much for having me! Little bit about myself – I’m a 40-something graphic designer who loves my husband, my cats, science fiction, photography and of course, writing.

I would say the underlying theme of my stories is “Hearts and flowers romance with a bit of angst thrown in for good measure”.

But that statement changed pretty drastically with both Broken Soldier and Rogue Soldier. I believe in challenging myself as a writer and taking chances. And that’s what I’ve done here with my Shadow Unit series. These books are dark and gritty, more romantic suspense than contemporary romance. I want people to constantly wonder if Connor and/or Shawn will survive to the end of the book.

It’s a big change for me, and I hope that my regular readers will give this series a chance. Because even though it’s not my usual style, I am, and always will be, the Queen of Happy Endings. I will put my boys through hell, but love and dedication will always put them back together again. So give it a try! You just might like it!

What part of the world do you call home? Can you tell us a little about where you grew up and where you live now?

I’ve lived a pretty boring life in that I was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago and still live there today!

How long have you been writing? Did you write as a child or is it something you developed a passion for later in life?

I’d been writing short stories since I was a kid and I also had two English teachers in high school that really encouraged me. But didn’t get serious about it until the mid-90’s when I started writing fanfic.

What gave you the courage to submit your first story to a publisher?

I got tired of hearing how bad all fanfic was, that fanfic writers had no talent. I took it as a challenge and decided to give going pro a shot. And what do you know, my very first book was accepted to a publisher on my very first try. Take that, fanfic haters!

I see you write M/M fiction. Would you characterize your stories as M/M romance, erotica, or something in between?

My new Shadow Unit series is romantic suspense and the rest of my books are contemporary romance.

What draws you to the M/M genre? Have you written in other genres?

This goes back to my fanfic days as well. I started off writing m/f fic and then by complete accident ended up reading my very first m/m story. To say it was a life changing experience would be an understatement! LOL! My eyes were opened and I jumped ship to the m/m world and have never looked back.

Are you a panster or a plotter?  Do you outline extensively or write your story as you go along?

I’m a big time plotter. My outlines are extensive, like pages long. So that takes up a good chunk of time before I even write the first word of the book. But then because I have done such detailed outlines, the writing of the actual book flows pretty easily after that.

Of the stories you’ve written, which one do you like the most? Which one would you recommend a new reader begin with?

Oh gosh, that’s like choosing your favorite child! LOL! But if I absolutely had to pick I would choose Burnin’ for You. I spent a couple of months in a fire academy class and used that experience to write the book. My firemen have a special place in my heart.

Most authors admit to feeling uncomfortable with the degree of self-promotion necessary to be successful. Are there some aspects of social media and self-promotion that make you more comfortable than others? Are there some you avoid like the plague?

I think the only thing I’m not really comfortable with is approaching reviewers. They make me nervous! Their word can either build me up or knock me down.

How often does your real life experience figure into your story telling? Do you base characters or stories on your actual experiences?

Oh yes, absolutely. It was actually my time spent in various citizen police and fire academy classes that inspired me to write nearly all of my books.

How much do you think that a good blurb and good cover art figure into the success of a story?

A LOT. If you can’t hook people with a few hundred words they won’t click on the BUY button. And a picture’s worth a thousand words, right? So I believe cover art is very important. And this is coming from a graphic designer who’s been doing advertising for over 20 years!

Do you miss your characters when you come to the end of their story? Do you find ways to write sequels for them or do you become entranced with a new set?

I do miss them! I’ve just spent sometimes a couple of months with them non-stop and suddenly they’re not talking in my head or appearing in my dreams. This was especially true with Connor and Shawn and probably why the idea for Rogue Soldier came to me so quickly after finishing Broken Soldier. And also why I’ve already started plotting out Book Three!

What are your writing goals for 2016?

My tag line is “Men in uniform…and out”. So far I’ve written cops, firemen, paramedics and now soldiers. I would like to tackle a Coast Guard book next. I’ve already started scribbling down notes.

rogue-cover-final-6x9-150dpiSUMMARY:

Rogue Soldier (Shadow Unit Book 2
)

Shadow Unit may have overturned the illegal arms cartel in Kuala Lumpur, but the harrowing undercover op left emotional scars on Sergeants Shawn Weller and Connor Finley. Slowly, patiently, they piece their partnership back together, closer now than ever before.

But the arrival of Julian Montgomery, Shawn’s former CIA handler and lover, threatens to tear them apart. Julian knows all of Shawn’s secrets as well as the past Shawn has kept hidden from Connor. Now the self-serving Julian wants Shawn back—with the CIA and with him. No one will get in his way. Including Connor.

When the joint Shadow Unit/CIA mission to stop the supplier of a deadly biological weapon goes sideways, Connor is captured, tortured, and used as a human test subject. It’s a race against time to save his life. But who can Shawn trust?

And who has gone rogue?

Missed Shawn and Connor’s earlier adventures? Read BROKEN SOLDIER, available from your favorite retailer.

EXCERPT:

Once on the ground floor, Shawn assembled the unit around him, scanning for Connor’s face. Perhaps his comm was just malfunctioning and he didn’t hear Shawn. But he didn’t see his partner anywhere.

“Has anyone seen Finley?” Shawn snapped.

There were headshakes all around and Shawn’s concern intensified with each negative response. Where the fuck was Connor?

“I might have seen something.”

Shawn’s head whipped to the left, to pin Julian with his gaze. “What exactly did you see?” he demanded.

“I was coming down the stairs and saw two of Hamid’s men escaping through the front entrance,” Julian said. “They were dragging a third man between them. I assumed it was another of his men, who was injured. But now that you say Finley is missing… It could’ve been him.”

“And you didn’t think to try and stop them, no matter who the third man was?” Shawn spat, getting up in Julian’s face.

Julian shrugged. “I was too far away and they were nearly out the door,” he replied.

Shawn was furious at Julian’s blasé attitude but wasn’t surprised, since it concerned Connor. He was about to say something else when his comm crackled and MacDonald’s voice cut in. “Shadow One, send sit-rep.”

“Alpha. Shadow Two. We have secured the facility and have several prisoners,” Shawn began. “Shadow One is currently unaccounted for. Request immediate GPS location of his cell phone.”

After a long pause, Liam responded. “Shadow Two, GPS location of Shadow One shows him at your current location. Approximately ten meters to your north.”

Ten meters north would put Connor outside. Shawn set off at a fast jog to the front of the building, his heart starting to beat faster the closer he got to the door. Was Connor lying out there injured, possibly dying? Or being held hostage with a gun to his head?

He burst through the door and froze, his rifle up and at the ready, Mandy and Chloe right behind him. All three began looking in every direction, trying to peer through the darkness of the night. When Connor wasn’t immediately within sight, Shawn turned to Chloe and Mandy. “Spread out,” he told them and headed to the left while Chloe went straight ahead and Mandy to the right.

“Where the fuck are you, Finn?” Shawn muttered, his chest tightening with ever increasing worry as he searched the area, unable to find his partner.

“Shawn! Over here!” Mandy called out over the comm.

Shawn reversed direction and ran to Mandy’s position. She pointed in front of her, brows drawn together in concern.

There, lying on the ground, were Connor’s tactical vest, comm earbud and phone, next to a fresh set of tire tracks.

Shawn felt his heart seize up as he looked out into the dark.

Connor was gone.

Blurb:

Dr. Miles Grant acknowledges that his destined mate could be either gender even though his bisexuality cost him his family and his pack. Luckily he found the Forbes Pack, who happily accept him just as he is. What he never counted on was finding his mate in Pittsburgh or for his mate to be another species entirely—a cat!

Quincy Archer isn’t just any jaguar shifter. He is the heir to the leadership of his pride. Destined mates are nothing but legend to the nearly extinct and generally solitary jaguars, and Quincy certainly never expected to find one for himself, much less a male… or a wolf.

However, finding each other and coming to terms with their species is the least of their worries. Quincy is expected to select a proper female mate, father a cub, and take his place as heir to the pride. Except Quincy refuses, having no interest in women or leadership and knowing he isn’t right for it. But his father will stop at nothing—not even attempting to kill Miles—to get his way. Quincy and Miles must overcome many obstacles to stay together as the destined mates they’re meant to be.

About Grace

Grace Duncan grew up with a wild imagination. She told stories from an early age – many grace_nohateof which got her into trouble. Eventually, she learned to channel that imagination into less troublesome areas, including fanfiction, which is what has led her to writing male/male erotica.

A gypsy in her own right, Grace has lived all over the United States. She has currently set up camp in East Texas with her husband and children – both the human and furry kind.

As one of those rare creatures who loves research, Grace can get lost for hours on the internet, reading up on any number of strange and different topics. She can also be found writing fanfiction, reading fantasy, crime, suspense, romance and other erotica or even dabbling in art.

Divine Magazine’s 2016 Summer Blog Hop & Giveaway!

summer-2016-blog-hopI’ll be the first to admit, I’m not really a fan of summer. To me summer is unbearable heat and humidity, mosquitoes and ticks, poison ivy and sweat. I don’t enjoy fireworks and I’d just as soon eat my picnic food indoors to avoid the gnats and ants. Summer is when I consider chopping off all my hair, until I remember that I look like an angry hedgehog with short hair, and believe me, that’s not a good look on me.

Melting Cat

Right now, it’s so hot, even the cats have melted! 🙂 You can see why I’m tempted to cut off all my hair.

So why, you might ask, am I participating in Divine Magazine’s Summer Blog Hop?

It’s a good question. I suspect the answer is I love blog hops, but I also love seasons. I’m fortunate to live in an area that has definitive seasons. Each one comes in its turn on a fairly predictable schedule. I love it it when the cold mud and snow of winter evolves into budding blossoms and balmy mornings where you don’t need that heavy coat. I adore autumn–that first time the temperatures drop twenty degrees, or the sound of dry leaves skittering across the pavement. I spend countless hours photographing my dogs in the snow, and I love hunkering down in front of a fireplace with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate.

Summer, I mostly endure.

But it has its moments as well. When I was a child, summer meant we went off to stay with our grandparents for a good bit of the season. Spending the summer with the grandparents was always fun because though there were still rules, the rules were different and somehow easier to follow. Summer meant fresh vegetables grown in their garden and cooked as only my grandmother could do. It meant staying up past my bedtime to watch my grandparents’ favorite television shows–programs we’d never be allowed to view at home. It was bowls of Cheerios as a bedtime snack, and up at sunrise to catch the bus for Vacation Bible School.

Leaping H_FBThat’s why we were sent–because of the wonderful Bible School. I know what you’re thinking, but this was Bible School done right. We spent an hour each morning with our lessons, and then the rest of the day we swam like fishes at the church lake. Every afternoon, we’d pile back into the bus, sunburnt and with ravenous appetites, to head home. On rainy days, we did crafts under wide pavilions, the damp misty air blowing cool on our skins. Or we played cards: Go Fish, Rook, Hearts, Jack-Change-It–I learned them all. I learned how to play chess, too–albeit badly. And some kind teenager, whose name I’ve forgotten, taught me how to swim as well.

There was no pressure. There was no push. It wasn’t a stepping stone to a better school or a rung in the ladder of personal achievements. The best part of it all was that the religious teaching didn’t come loaded with so much of what I see and hear now–or perhaps I just wasn’t aware of it then. It felt simple, however, without judgement or anger. More New Testament and less Old. And the rest of the time, we were allowed to be children.

I think I’d enjoy summer if it was like that again!

There is a GREAT giveaway going for this blog hop–some participants are doing an individual giveaway but the Grand Prize has it all: jewelry, a promotional tour, and gift cards from Dreamspinner Press! To enter the Rafflecopter for the Grand Prize, you must click on the link and leave a comment on the page there. As part of my giveaway here, if you leave a comment telling me what your favorite thing to eat on a hot summer day is, I’ll randomly select someone to win their choice from my backlist. Also, I just released my latest M/M contemporary romance–Fool’s Gold!

More on KU , a Rafflecopter, and the upcoming release of Fool’s Gold!

Today I’m over at at Authors Speak at Rainbow Gate talking about my ongoing internal debate about whether or not to give KU a chance with my upcoming release of Fool’s Gold. I’ve posted about this before, but I have gathered new information since then, and guess what? It hasn’t made the decision any easier.

dangerI think what it’s going to come down to is doing it on a trial basis and seeing how it compares to the kinds of sales I’d expect otherwise. I mean, I won’t really know unless I try it myself, right? But if you’re also sitting on the KU fence, you’d be wise to read my cautionary tales in the Authors Speak post! Heck, even if you’re not sitting on the fence–if you have stories in KU, you’d better keep an eye on things!

In other news, we’re holding a Rafflecopter giveaway for those who sign up to follow the Authors Speak blog! Check out this post to participate and find out what you could win!

On the home front, I’m pleased to say by this time next month I’ll be attending Writer’s Police Academy! To say I’m looking forward to this is a bit of an understatement. I don’t get to travel much, so I’m looking forward to being in a different venue, but oh! The fun I will have! In addition to the regular seminars, I won lotteries to courses on ballistics and death scene investigations. I’m so excited! The hard part is going to be choosing between seminars held at the same time. I’m also looking forward to using the knowledge gained in upcoming stories, so be prepared for some gritty action in my future romances. 🙂

I’m also pleased to announce that Unspeakable Words is getting a makeover, with additional scenes that will expand it into a full-length novel! Unspeakable Words is the first major story I ever had published, and this revision is something I’ve wanted to do for a while now. It only makes sense to have all the stories in the Sixth Sense series in the same format, and it had always bugged me just a little that UW was only a novella while the other stories were novels. So yay for Dreamspinner to allow me to publish a second addition! Hopefully it will be out by March of 2017.

I’m also pleased to announce Dreamspinner has picked up my Christmas-themed story called Holiday House Swap! When a reclusive writer on a tight deadline trades homes for the holidays in order to get fresh perspective, the last thing he expects to find is the actual owner in residence. Misinformation, misapprehensions, and general hi-jinks ensue. It’s one of my favorite tropes–the home for the holidays story. I think you’ll find it loads of fun. 🙂 Tentative release planned for December 2016.

But before both of those, I’ll be releasing my sport horse story, Fool’s Gold. It’s being formatted now, and I hope to have it available within the next few weeks–I’m timing it for the 2016 Summer Games, as it has an Olympic storyline. There will be a book tour soon, and I’ll be posting some excerpts as well. This story has a lot of personal meaning to me, as I used to event myself before I had to retire my mare from competition due to arthritis.

Bound by secrets he cannot share, Rich was forced to give up Jake eight years ago. Now he has a second chance to help Jake realize his dreams. But the secrets that drove them apart haven’t changed, and Rich must face them or risk losing Jake forever.

So that’s all the news in Lake Wobegone for the moment. 🙂 Stay tuned for updates as they become available. 🙂

Max trembled as Jasper’s calloused hands travelled firmly over his body, coming to rest on Max’s hips. Jasper tugged Max toward him the last inch or two. Max followed willingly. They pressed up against one another, the pressure so welcome, so satisfying, and yet, not satisfying at all.

Jasper moved to Max’s ear, kissing and caressing, even nipping softly. Max shuddered, a wave of bliss coursing through him, foreshadowing pleasures to come.

Jasper wedged his fingers between them at Max’s neck, unfastening the top button of Max’s shirt. He exposed the tiniest bit of throat, kissing and licking as he reached for another button. Max pulled away, panting and dizzy.

“Let’s move to the divan,” Jasper whispered before taking Max’s earlobe between his teeth.

“Yes,” Max agreed. Then, “No. No!” He yanked himself from Jasper’s embrace. “I can’t. We can’t.” His voice broke, and he stood, half bent, clutching his gut like a man in pain. He’d felt so complete in the circle of Jasper’s arms, safe, cherished. But at the same time, as if he were caught in a trap. How could he bear such conflicting emotions?

New Release and Giveaway: Broken Solider by Jamie Lynn Miller

Broken Soldier Book cover

I’m so excited to have Jamie Lynn Miller for an interview today, and to share about her latest release, Broken Solider!

I was fortunate enough to meet Jamie at Rainbow Con last summer, and it was like meeting an old friend! We share a lot of the same interests, including our love of sci-fi television shows and hot men in hot water. 🙂 Be sure to check out the terrific interview, and leave a comment to be entered for a chance at one of Jamie’s backlist stories.

Without further ado, here’s Jamie!

Hello! Welcome to my blog and thank you for answering my nosy discerning questions!

But that statement changed pretty drastically with Broken Soldier. I believe in challenging myself as a writer and taking chances. And that’s what I’ve done here. This book is dark and gritty. It tackles drug use/addiction and how far Shawn is willing to go, submitting himself to the bad guy emotionally and physically until it breaks him and nearly kills him.

This is a big change for me, and I hope that my regular readers will give this book a chance.

Definitely contemporary romance.

It was actually my time spent in various citizen police academy classes that inspired me to write Broken Soldier. I would listen to the detectives talk about undercover work and how far they needed to go and how dangerous it could be and how it could end up breaking them, living this other life. And this was just to take down drug dealers or gangs. So I upped the ante even further by making this a military book and the “target” an arms dealer supplying weapons to terrorists. Just imagine the lengths a covert ops team would go to, to stop this man. I really put Connor and Shawn (most especially Shawn) through the emotional and physical wringer to complete their mission.

But that said, I’ve only ever written one sequel (to Burnin’ for You called Where There’s Smoke). After my “mourning period” I find new characters beginning to talk to me.

What are your writing goals for 2016?

My tag line is “Men in uniform…and out”. So far I’ve written cops, firemen, paramedics and now soldiers. I would like to tackle a Coast Guard book next. I’ve already started scribbling down notes.

SUMMARY:

Sergeant Connor Finley and Sergeant Shawn Weller are dedicated soldiers working covert ops for Shadow Unit — a joint UK/US anti-terrorism task force.

Partners in the field and out, they had been through hell together for the last four years and made it through standing side by side. But when their latest undercover op to bring down an arms dealer plunges them into a world of drugs, sex and violence, Shawn must literally get in bed with the enemy in order to complete the mission. And Connor is forced to watch, helpless, as his partner is broken into pieces.

Will love be enough to put them both back together or will this be their final mission?

WARNING: Contains scenes of drug use, graphic sex and realistic situations

EXCERPT:

Connor continued on, pointing at Shawn, his voice rising. “Look at him! We’ve turned him into a fucking addict! Do you know why he’s here right now? Because he was so strung out last night that I couldn’t leave him alone!” Connor’s voice was steel, his eyes flashing anger. “This has gone too far. Pull him out. Now!”

“NO!” Shawn pushed himself to his feet and slammed his hand down on the table.

He knew full well that he looked like hell and knew what he was turning into. But he also knew he was a soldier and not a fucking quitter when things got rough. He would see this mission through to the end, not be consigned to the sidelines.

“No one’s pulling me out,” Shawn said forcefully. Connor angrily shook his head and Shawn ignored him. “Not when we’re this close to nailing this asshole.” He pointed to Mandy. “We don’t even know if we can use anything on that drive. But I know the weapons will be here soon. I can get the name of the supplier and where the exchange is going down.” He stared straight at MacDonald. “Leave me in.”

There was utter silence in the hub as the team waited for MacDonald’s answer.

After a long moment where neither Shawn nor MacDonald broke eye contact, MacDonald finally tipped his head. “Very well. I trust your judgment.”

“Fuck!” Connor spat, then threw his arms out. “Am I the only one that sees his judgment is impaired?”

Shawn blew out a long breath. “Connor, I can –“

Connor jabbed a finger at him. “Don’t you fucking say you can handle it, Shawn!” He crossed his arms over his chest. “I mean, do you even have any idea how you’re supposed to get back in Chan’s house undetected? You were supposed to have been there all night.”

“Actually, yes, Connor, I do,” Shawn snapped at him, angry that his partner suddenly seemed to have so little faith in his ability to do his job and it stung.

“I found a blind spot in the security camera grid outside of the pool. I purposely left the doors unlocked in case I ever needed to use that route to get in or out unseen,” he explained. “I noticed that the guards do twelve-hour shifts and they change at noon. Right now there’s only one at the house. Jae took the other two with him. The guy who came on at midnight will have thought I went with Jae to Jakarta, so he wouldn’t have been wondering where I was last night. The guy who comes on at noon and then sees me in the house will think I’ve been there all night.”

Connor’s brow furrowed. “That’s bloody risky.”

“Maybe. But it’s all I’ve got,” Shawn said simply. He looked down at his watch. “And I’ve got to go if I’m going to time this right.”

“Watch yourself,” MacDonald told him.

“Will do, boss,” Shawn answered, bending down to pick up his drawstring bag then turned and headed for the stairs.

Connor caught up with him halfway down, taking hold of his arm, stopping him. Shawn pulled out of his grasp, his expression hard.

“I’m not going to apologize for being worried about you,” Connor said. “I’ve seen things they haven’t. I know what’s been going on between you and Chan. They don’t.” He put his hands on Shawn’s shoulders, his voice quieting. “It’s not that I don’t think you can do your job. I just don’t want to lose you to it. I can’t.”

Shawn’s eyes softened. “You won’t, Connor.” He touched his paracord bracelet still on Connor’s wrist. “I told you I’d be back for this. And I always keep my promises.”

New Release & Giveaway: Patience from Grace R. Duncan

PatienceFS

Isn’t this a gorgeous cover? Please join me in welcoming Grace Duncan to the site, to share about her latest installment of the Forbes Mates series: Patience, now available from Dreamspinner Press.

Hello! Thank you to Sarah for giving me time to ramble!

This is the fifth stop on the Music Clues part of the blog tour. Links to all the stops can be found on my website at the blog tour page.

I’m a huge music fan and when I sat down to write Patience, I’d figured out pretty quickly that Chad was, as well. He absolutely loves 80s music and has a tendency to quote (or, rather, refer to them since I didn’t want to get into copyright trouble) the songs. Twelve of those 80s songs were referenced by Chad throughout Patience.

For twelve of the stops on the tour, there will be a clue (the reference) to one of the songs and an answer with excerpt for one of the other songs. You can see which blogs are participating on the blog tour page above.

For today, the answer song is Old Time Rock & Roll by Bob Seger.

The clue was: “The song changed, and even he recognized the opening piano chords. A few seconds later, Chad slid across the wooden floor in nothing but underwear, white socks and his button-down shirt. He was holding a hairbrush, not a candleholder, but Jamie knew what he was doing.”

You can see the video here.  (Please note: UMG has done its best to pull EVERY copy of the official video out there. This is someone’s version with a live version of the song overdubbed over the original, with the original video. UMG wouldn’t have this problem if they’d get with the times like the other record labels and put the videos up themselves.)

Also, here is the snippet from Risky Business.

And the excerpt from Patience:

The song changed, and even he recognized the opening piano chords. A few seconds later, Chad slid across the wooden floor in nothing but underwear, white socks and his button-down shirt. He was holding a hairbrush, not a candleholder, but Jamie knew what he was doing. He snorted. He couldn’t exactly laugh in wolf form, but he could chuff and snort, and he did so.

It only got worse when Chad turned around and his shirt was open halfway down. His mate was built much more nicely than Tom Cruise—especially from that movie—but he couldn’t resist another snort at what Chad was doing.

Then Chad started singing along, even doing the same hand gestures. Jamie flopped down, shaking his head. The little butt wiggle compensated for some of the goofiness. When Chad threw the hairbrush, though, and pointed, Jamie put his paws over his eyes. He didn’t think he could watch anymore.

He couldn’t resist for long, though and peeked to see Chad still singing along, playing air guitar in all the right spots. He had to admit, he was impressed when Chad did the kneel-and-lean-back thing. Of course, Jamie simply imagined himself straddling Chad in that position—not an image he wanted to entertain in that moment. He seriously didn’t want another wolfy hard-on. He put his paws back over his eyes.

When the volume went down a moment later, Chad snorted. “Everybody’s a critic. You gotta admit, I look better than Tom Cruise did.”

Jamie chuffed and stuck his tongue out.

And the next clue is here:

“He sang along with a ridiculous grin on his face as Modern English went on about stopping the world and the future being wide open.”

Each tour stop will have an individual prize as well as an entry into the grand prize.  Good luck! And thanks for participating!

Blurb:

Jamie Ryan was almost ready to accept he’d never find his destined mate. They’re uncommon to begin with and same-sex versions downright rare. Since his gay best friend found a destined mate, Jamie figured he was out of luck. Until end of semester stress forces him to go through the full-moon shift early. Stuck in wolf form, he runs into none other than his destined mate. Who’s human.

Chad Sutton has always had good instincts. They served him well as a detective and continued on when he went private. Those instincts tell him there’s something about the dog that comes up to him while running away from animal control that isn’t quite right. He works to put the pieces together, but is unsuccessful until his dog turns into a human before his eyes.

Jamie has no idea what a shifter’s mate bite will do to a human. He’s terrified to try—and possibly kill his mate. They hunt together for answers while working together on a case for Chad. It’s easy to see they belong together, but Jamie fears the gods gave him someone he can’t keep.
