Things I wish someone had told me as a newbie author and other musings…

Well, it’s been a quiet week in Lake Wobegone—no wait. Not exactly. 🙂

It’s been a bit crazy, to be honest. I wrote a blog post on piracy and file-sharing that struck a chord with a lot of people. I’ve been attempting to respond to the sudden influx of emails, Facebook notifications, Tweets, and comments on the post itself. That’s derailed my week a bit, though in a good way.

Today is the first day of my monthly guest spots on Lou Sylvre‘s Authors Speak at Rainbow Gate blog. I’ll be posting on at Authors Speak on the 12th lof each month for now. For my debut, I decided to dig out and revise an older post, but one I felt was still relevant: Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me as a Newbie Author. My thanks to Lou for inviting me to be a regular part of the blog! I only hope I won’t disappoint–I’m not always eloquent and coherent, you know!

In the meantime, I have one revision on a deadline, another book in final edits, an injured cat, and a disrupted week because of needing minor surgery myself. Which means I’m probably going to be slow to answer comments and emails–I apologize in advance.

And though I’m told it’s dumb to release a cover without a buy link/pre-order link available with it, I don’t care. This cover by Reese Dante for my upcoming story is so lovely, I can’t wait to share it with you! Fool’s Gold is looking at a mid-July release date at the moment–I’ll tell you more when I get closer to the date.

Blurb: Eight years ago, Jake Stanford had it all: a spot on the U.S. Olympic Equestrian Team and the love of his life, Rich Evans. A tragic accident wipes out everything in the blink of an eye. Hard work and sacrifice get him another shot at Olympic Gold, but only if he puts his past behind him and agrees to work with Rich again.

Bound by secrets he cannot share, Rich was forced to give up Jake eight years ago. Now he has a second chance to help Jake realize his dreams. But the secrets that drove them apart haven’t changed, and Rich must face them or risk losing Jake forever.

Acceptance

(Forbes Mates Book 3)

By Grace R. Duncan

Dr. Miles Grant acknowledges that his destined mate could be either gender even though his bisexuality cost him his family and his pack. Luckily he found the Forbes Pack, who happily accept him just as he is. What he never counted on was finding his mate in Pittsburgh or for his mate to be another species entirely—a cat!

Quincy Archer isn’t just any jaguar shifter. He is the heir to the leadership of his pride. Destined mates are nothing but legend to the nearly extinct and generally solitary jaguars, and Quincy certainly never expected to find one for himself, much less a male… or a wolf.

However, finding each other and coming to terms with their species is the least of their worries. Quincy is expected to select a proper female mate, father a cub, and take his place as heir to the pride. Except Quincy refuses, having no interest in women or leadership and knowing he isn’t right for it. But his father will stop at nothing—not even attempting to kill Miles—to get his way. Quincy and Miles must overcome many obstacles to stay together as the destined mates they’re meant to be.

Excerpt

Miles flopped down on the end of the couch in the tiny break room and rested his head on the back. His eyes closed on their own before he could tell them to. He didn’t have long—maybe twenty, if he was lucky.

He was seriously regretting taking on so many shifts. But he’d been missing Quincy and needed something to occupy his mind, to distract him. It was ridiculous, he knew that; they’d met twice. But they were mates, destined, and their bond had already started forming. His wolf had been driving him crazy, pushing him to try to find Quincy and mate.

The problem was, whether he liked it or not, he didn’t doubt for a moment Quincy spoke the truth about why they couldn’t be together yet. He’d talked to Chad and Jamie a little and got the gist of the problems Quincy was having, though Chad wasn’t in good enough shape to do much talking yet. He was still recovering from the change, still learning how to filter sounds and light, still learning how to be a wolf.

But Miles’s wolf didn’t understand, didn’t give a shit about any of that. In fact, he was pushing Miles to protect Quincy, which was more than a little laughable. He’d been truthful—he wasn’t afraid of a cat—but he had no knowledge whatsoever of the jaguar world. It still killed him that Diana had given him a cat. He’d been ready for his mate to be either male or female; he would have been content with either, even if his family and former pack had other ideas about that. But no, he had to get a different species altogether.

And a species he didn’t know a damned thing about. He didn’t know how far someone like Quincy’s father would go to get his way. And Miles was a healer, not a fighter. He could fight—all shifters learned how—but that didn’t mean he relished it, so he wasn’t as good as most others.

He needed to see Quincy again, even for a little while. He could appease his wolf a little, make himself feel a little better, and maybe find some patience to wait more.

Quincy had sent a few messages since he’d seen his mate last—in the emergency room waiting area two months ago—mostly texts and a couple of e-mails to let Miles know he was still alive and still in hiding. They’d exchanged little bits about each other, but Quincy hadn’t wanted to say a lot lest it was intercepted. It wasn’t much, but at least knowing Quincy was okay helped keep Miles from going completely insane. He’d like to think he’d know if Quincy was killed, but he wasn’t sure how far their thin bond went, for something like that. When he’d asked Chad how Quincy had gotten his contact information since he’d never had a chance to give it, Chad had told Miles not to wonder about it. But Miles knew at least part of what Quincy did and wasn’t worried. He didn’t think for a moment Quincy would use it against him.

The last two months had been pure hell. He had no idea how Tanner had managed to keep Finley at arm’s length for two years. Granted, they’d been able to date, hang out together, that sort of thing, and he hadn’t so much as glimpsed Quincy in two months.

So he’d spent most of it working. A few times he’d been told point-blank to go home, that he’d been working too much. Whether he’d liked it or not, they’d been right. He’d been so tired he’d barely been standing. But after getting a few hours’ sleep—filled with some very vivid dreams of Quincy—he’d needed to do something.

Since he couldn’t go back to work, he decided to do the other thing he was good at: learn. He’d gone down to the Carnegie Library in Oakland and begun reading up on all things Ancient Egypt, starting with Bastet. He had no idea how much of it was accurate to the jaguars and how much was pure myth, but he figured having a basis to start from wouldn’t hurt.

Miles sighed and sat up again, eyeing the coffee machine in the corner. It was clear he wasn’t going to get any sleep, so he might as well get going the only other way he could. But as he stood and turned to the counter, he got hit with a huge tangle of emotion that wasn’t his. Anger seemed the primary emotion, though there was fear mixed in. And pain. Too much pain.

Quincy?

Miles raced out of the room, not thinking about how it would look—not thinking much at all. If Quincy was close, something was very, very wrong.

Just as he rounded the corner near the ambulance entrance, one of the nurses ran up to meet him. “Dr. Grant! Your pa—”

“Partner,” Miles interrupted, then stopped himself when the nurse simply blinked at him. He’d never told them about a partner—because he hadn’t actually had one, as far as he knew—but he’d deal with that later. “A friend called me,” he said, thinking quickly.

“Oh. Okay. They’re bringing him in now.”

“Thanks. How bad is it?”

Just then the doors opened and the paramedics pushed Quincy in on a stretcher. He was naked except for a sheet, his normally pale skin way too light. He had long gashes on his chest and stomach, but the rest was covered by the sheet. It looked like the scratches—probably caused by shifter claws, if he was any judge—had already started healing, though plenty more still looked wrong with him.

Miles had to take a quick breath, then a second as Quincy’s scent hit him hard—the hint of graphite and paper that overlaid a sweetness incongruent to Quincy’s outer personality. Miles had to shove hard on his wolf. He wanted out and wanted to go after whatever or whoever hurt their mate. Not now. We’ll help our mate, but not now.

With another breath through his mouth, he went into professional mode, falling back on his training and knowledge so he could make sure Quincy healed properly and didn’t raise too many eyebrows in the process.

New Release from Elizabeth Noble: Ringed Love

RingedLoveFS_resized

Please welcome Elizabeth Noble as she shares with us about the final installment in the Sentries series: Ringed Love!

Hello and thank you, Sarah, for hosting me today. The first chapter of Ringed Love is posted on Dreamspinner Press, so over the next two weeks I’ll be offering the first one hundred or so words of each subsequent chapter.

Today’s excerpt is from chapter 8

Excerpt

Todd juggled two shopping baskets and elbowed Nick in the side. “Grab a newspaper, will you? And see if we have any mail.”

“I can carry—” Nick held out his good hand. His other one was wrapped in bandages from wrist to shoulder and in a sling. Dark bruises splattered his skin where the top few buttons of his shirt were left open. There was a long bruise snaking up the side of his neck that stopped just under his jaw.

Todd glared. Nick backed down with a frustrated sigh. “Don’t make those huffy noises at me!” Todd snapped. “All the crap we’ve gone through in the last five years, and you almost get taken out by a ticked-off bull calf.”

Blurb

New Colorado Protectorate fell with the assassination of Chancellor Clarke. Like many others, Todd and Nick Ruger left the land of their birth and made a home to the north in Yellowknife. Their world was ever changing. The time came to say a sad farewell to some of their friends and loved ones, but they were taken in with open arms by others and in turn offered shelter to yet more. Through the years they remained steadfast in their duty as sentries to protect and defend those that needed it the most.

Time marches on but through it all they hold each other dear and cherish the love they’ve shared. There are still angry ghosts, Windigos and water spirits to contend with. Their lives change, offering them new roles. When the time comes, they do what sentries have done for generations prior and teach others the skills to carry on as sentries. The Rugers lives were rich and their hearts full with their devotion and love for each other. The tradition of the sentries lived on forever. It was the legacy of Todd and Nick Ruger. That was the way it was always meant to be.

Being able to share her works with Dreamspinner is really a dream come true. She has a real love for a good mystery complete with murder and twisty plots as well as all things sci-fi, futuristic, and supernatural and a bit of an unnatural interest in a super-volcano in Wyoming.

Elizabeth has three grown children and is now happily owned by an adorable mixed breed canine princess and her sidekick, tabby cat.  She lives in her native northeast Ohio, the perfect place for gardening and winter and summer sports (go Tribe and Cavs!) and stargazing all year long. Detective Aidan Calloway is rock-solid strong. He’s a man of justice—loyal to his friends, family, and job—even if it requires bending a law…or two. He shields himself behind an abrasive, fearless facade, until a phone call one night chips his armor and throws his perfectly planned, hollow life into a tailspin.

***This book contains scenes and subject matter some readers may find distressing.***

Although part of a series, this book can be read as a stand-alone.

“This book is wonderful and beautifully worded. Jessie has a gift with words.” – Reader Review

“This story is not only an emotional roller coaster but it is full of action and mystery as well. There are several different stories all coming to a proverbial head in this book, and the outcome is excellent.” – Alpha Book Club

(This is taken from a scene between Aidan and Jessie.)

“You don’t give up, do you?”
“Not when it comes to you. No.”
“Jess, I’m not easy. I have more baggage than the underbelly of a cargo plane.”
“Then I’ll set my bags right next to yours.”
He shook his head. No one had ever been this relentless to be with his miserable ass.
“I’ve got one last question for you,” Jessie said.
Aidan turned his head slightly toward him but refused to make eye contact.
“Do you…” Jessie hesitated and rubbed his hands on his thighs again, revealing a hint of that introverted, vulnerable side others usually saw when they looked at him. “Do you want to be with me?”

Point-blank. That was the million-dollar question that determined how this conversation would end. Even if he did have enough energy to erect his shield, he couldn’t lie to Jessie. He exhaled heavily. “More than anything.”

“Then that settles it.”

“Jess…it’s not that easy.”
“Don’t make it harder.”

Aidan sighed. “I’m not used to this,” he said, gesturing between them with his hand.

“Talking or having a relationship?”
“Either. Both. Fuck if I know.”
“Okay. Well, you’ve never had a problem talking to me before, so we’ll work up to the big stuff. One detail a week. I’m not going to stress you out with a one-a-day quota. One detail we wouldn’t share with anyone else.”
One a week. Aidan forcefully rubbed his hands together. He could handle that. Maybe. Sorta.
“And as far as the whole relationship thing, I’m not an expert. But, we kinda already have something. Don’t you think?” Jessie looked over to him with a hint of a smile playing in his expression, cocking his head.
He definitely wasn’t an expert in relationships, but if Jessie thought this defined a relationship, then maybe he could totally handle this.
Jessie bumped his shoulder. “We’re just missing out on all the fun stuff.”
Aidan groaned. It drove him nuts when Jessie teased him.
“I’m not saying it’ll be easy. I know…” Jessie hesitated and rubbed his thighs again. “I know we’re both very different from each other and from what other people usually see when they look at us. But…I see you, not the guy you want everyone else to see. And you’re worth it, Aidan. It bothers me that you don’t recognize how amazing you are, but I’m willing to give this a shot. I just…I hope you think the same of me.” He quieted for a few moments then subtly nodded, concluding some internal conversation. “You work at things so you can appreciate the success at the end.”
Aidan shook his head and scoffed. Jessie and his inspirational poster lines…too fucking cute to deny. His ability to take a mountain and turn it into a few pellets of dust always amazed Aidan. Jessie was bossier than people could imagine and far more of a control freak than anyone suspected.
“Jess.”
“Yeah?”
“You’re totally worth it.”

Jaime Reese is the alter ego of an artist who loves the creative process of writing, just not about herself. Fiction is far more interesting. She has a weakness for broken, misunderstood heroes and feels everyone deserves a chance at love and life. An avid fan of a happy ending, she believes those endings acquired with a little difficulty are more cherished.

Excerpt

Max trembled as Jasper’s calloused hands travelled firmly over his body, coming to rest on Max’s hips. Jasper tugged Max toward him the last inch or two. Max followed willingly. They pressed up against one another, the pressure so welcome, so satisfying, and yet, not satisfying at all.

Jasper moved to Max’s ear, kissing and caressing, even nipping softly. Max shuddered, a wave of bliss coursing through him, foreshadowing pleasures to come.

Jasper wedged his fingers between them at Max’s neck, unfastening the top button of Max’s shirt. He exposed the tiniest bit of throat, kissing and licking as he reached for another button. Max pulled away, panting and dizzy.

“Let’s move to the divan,” Jasper whispered before taking Max’s earlobe between his teeth.

“Yes,” Max agreed. Then, “No. No!” He yanked himself from Jasper’s embrace. “I can’t. We can’t.” His voice broke, and he stood, half bent, clutching his gut like a man in pain. He’d felt so complete in the circle of Jasper’s arms, safe, cherished. But at the same time, as if he were caught in a trap. How could he bear such conflicting emotions?

Cross to Bare-4

synopsis

Tough in business but romantic at heart, fashion designer Lenny James isn’t hiding his masculinity behind his super successful female alter ego, but a vulnerability that only handsome financier Brook Hunter will be man enough to reveal…and worship.
TWO OF A KIND
It’s amazing what a little mascara and lipstick, a blonde wig, false boobs, and top-notch female fashion can hide. Not that Lenny James is hiding his masculinity. He uses his normal voice when he’s Laverne, and he’s not particularly camp as a man. His reasons for creating his alter ego are locked deep in his past. He is who he is: tough in business, and a romantic at heart. What he’s hiding is vulnerability. He wants a man to accept both sides of him.
Gorgeous, commanding, and dark as sin, Brook Hunter meets Lenny and knows nothing about Laverne until fate pushes her into his path. Cross-dressing is as far from Brook’s reality as fashion is from his world of diplomacy and high finance. Understanding and truth take time, and trust doesn’t come easy. But Brook is about to show Lenny that there are no sides to true love, just the place where they meet in the middle.

Brook smiled. “The chemistry is still there, though. No doubt about that.” His brows furrowed. “And if I remember from our last window encounter, you promised to return the favour,” he murmured as he reached out and removed the glass from Lenny’s hands. He put the whisky down on the table by the window then dipped his finger in the cool liquid. Brook’s finger came up, and he slid it across Lenny’s bottom lip, slowly. He thought he was going to shoot in his pants with the eroticism of that gesture. The whisky flavour burned into his lips and he slid his tongue out and sucked the finger caressing his mouth. Brook’s eyes widened in lust, the pupils expanding. His lips parted and Lenny wanted to thrust his tongue and his cock inside the hot, wet heat of that mouth.
“Let’s get this over with, shall we, because obviously neither of us can wait,” Brook whispered, as his tongue slid into Lenny’s ear. His hands slid under the red jacket, tugging the shirt from his trousers, and then caressing the heated skin beneath. “Otherwise we’ll not enjoy my wonderful Chicken Cacciatore that I slaved over all day. Let’s fuck first, talk later.”
Lenny agreed wholeheartedly. With a low moan, he mashed his mouth against Brook’s and took possession of it. Familiar and wanton in return, Brook’s questing tongue slid into Lenny’s mouth. The slippery sensation of that deliciously heated organ, currently on a quest to drive him crazy, took him back to those passion fuelled days when he and Brook had been together. The feel of strong fingers against Lenny’s skin and the heat of that body pressed against his – it was if they’d never been apart. Lenny wasn’t one for insta-love but insta-lust he could definitely understand.
“I’d forgotten how damn good you taste and feel,” Brook gasped as his hands fumbled with buttons, opening Lenny’s trousers. He cried out as Brook’s hand slid inside his silk boxers and slid fingers down his hardened and wet cock. “This – this is what I want, you inside me.”
That phrase made Lenny thrust his cock harder into the tight confines of Brook’s hand.
“You keep saying that and I won’t have anything to fuck you with because you’ll make me come,” he managed to get out. “Turn around, face the glass.” He didn’t wait for Brook to obey, simply spun him round hard and slammed him against the cold, silken wall. “You’d better hope this is one way glass, because otherwise your neighbours are going to see you being royally skewered this time.” Lenny kicked off his trousers and underwear, giving a sigh of relief as his cock sprung free.

Hello Susan! Welcome to my blog and thank you for answering my nosy, I mean discerning, questions! First, please tell us a little about yourself and the kinds of stories you like to write. Would you say there is an underlying theme behind your stories?
Hi Sarah, it’s great being here with you again. Well, I live in the UK, just outside London, and besides working in the Financial Services industry, I’m a writer and editor of an online magazine. I write gay fiction, of the romance kind as you know. There are themes in any story I think, depending on the unique storyline, but my overall message is that there is always hope for two people to find each other, even when faced with what might seem like insurmountable odds.
What gave you the courage to submit your first story to a publisher?
I’d written my first book, which started off a screenplay, and once it was done, I remembered that I’d Linked In with a romance publisher called Boroughs. I thought, what the hell, they can only say no. I submitted the story and no one was more surprised than I was when they said yes. It was the first and only publisher I’d submitted to so I was blown away. It was one of the best moments of my life.
I see you write M/M fiction. Would you characterize your stories as M/M romance, erotica, or something in between?
I write M/M Romance, I guess, if anyone needs to label it. It’s a genre I’m very proud to be in, as there are so many talented story tellers in it. Ultimately it’s simply fiction, set in the romance/science fiction/detective/paranormal genre, featuring gay protagonists. There’s a lot of controversy around the terms M/M Romance and Gay fiction. I’m not going to go into that though!
In the long run, I’d like to think I write books with a story first but which happen to have gay characters as the protagonists. In its early days, one of my books, Love and Punishment, spent a long time in the Mystery and Thriller category, with no LGBT labeling attached. It also won a crime award in a group that wasn’t gay focused. I rather liked this; that one of my books is classed as what it is about first, a novel about crime and intrigue, rather than just an M/M or gay romance book.
Do you have a favorite character that you’ve created? Why does this character resonate with you?
I think my favourite character so far is Leslie Scott from Suit Yourself. I love his wide eyed appreciation of the world and his drive to make things better for everyone. I have a fondness for heel wearing characters in books I read, those men who aren’t afraid to show another side to themselves. Leslie seemed to climb into the heart of a lot of readers, and they loved his sassiness and tender nature.
If you could have one super power or magical element from popular science fiction movies or literature, what would it be and why?
I want to be able to travel in time. I have this burning desire to visit the past places from history and see them for myself. London in the 1880’s is somewhere I’d love to visit. See if I could solve the Jack the Ripper case  I haven’t much interest in the future though; I prefer to let that play out without knowing too much.
Do you see your writing as a hobby or is it your goal to be a full time writer at some point in the future?
It is definitely my goal to be a full time writer at some point. I’ve just reduced my work week to four days and to me, that’s a start. It means I can perhaps give more focus to writing more books, and with more books hopefully comes more income. It’s a pipe dream at the moment to give up full time but without a dream, we have nothing to chase and aspire to.
Research: love it or hate it?
I love doing the research. It’s like taking a long car trip on your way to a treasured holiday- stopping off at the services for a burger and a cup of coffee, or a local pub for lunch or getting out the car and taking photos of the scenery on the top of a mountain or hill. It’s a part of the journey. You know you’re going to end up somewhere beautiful or cherished at the end, but the steps there are as valued as actually reaching the end destination. Not to mention you learn something and have fun while doing it. I’ve visited a lighthouse on the coast, lived in a circus, walked up the hill to the Tor in Glastonbury and spent time in a town of magical intrigue called Mistley not far from where I live -so it’s all good memories.
How much do you think that a good blurb and good cover art figure into the success of a story?
I think it’s important. A cover is the first thing you see when you’re looking for something to read. It needs to hold your interest. Having said that, I’ve seen covers that aren’t perhaps too exciting but the blurb sounds good. So it’s critical to have both representing the story as best they can in my opinion.
Have you ever been intimidated by reviews?
Of course. I started out feeling gutted when I read a bad review. It would make me question my talent as a writer. After a while, I was able to shrug it off, realise that as long as you got more praise for your stories than damnation, you were doing a good job. Now I read reviews on Amazon, not Goodreads, and I’m able to nod my head and see if criticism is constructive, or not and if not, then ignore it.
What are your writing goals for 2016? Your personal goals?
I have a release due out on 28th January- the sixth book in my Men of London series. It’s called Flying Solo and is Maxwell Lewis’s story. We meet him in Suit Yourself. I’ve finished book seven ‘Damaged Goods’ already-that’s Jax’s story, the young teen we meet in Feat of Clay. I’m also currently writing the last book in this series, Hard Climate, which is Ryan ad Mango’s story, who we met in Cross to Bare. I’ve also started writing my next stand-alone novel, ‘Living on Air, the one set in a circus. I’ve also got plans for a spin off series from Men of London, featuring Tate and Clay from Feat Of Clay. This will be a detective thriller series featuring them all the way through but with different cases each time. So there is plenty on the go.

Thank you for joining us here today, Susan! As always, you bring such colorful characters vividly to life–I can’t wait to see what you come up with next!

Kindle Alexander: the Full Domain Book Tour and Giveaway!

Title: Full Domain
Series: Nice Guys Novel #3
Author: Kindle Alexander
Genre: M/M Romance
Release Date: January 12, 2016
Honor, integrity, and loyalty are how Deputy US Marshal Kreed Sinacola lives his life. A former SEAL now employed by the Special Operations Group of the US Marshal Service, Kreed spent most of his life working covert operations and avoiding relationships. Never one to mix business with pleasure, his boundaries blur and his convictions are put to the test when he finally comes face-to-face with the hot computer geek he’s been partnered with. Hell-bent on closing the ongoing case for his longtime friend, he pushes past his own limits and uncovers more than he expects.

Aaron Stuart strives for one thing: justice. Young and full of idealism, his highly sought after computer skills land him a position with the National Security Agency. Aaron’s biggest hazard at his job is cramped fingers, but all that changes when he is drawn into the middle of a dangerous federal investigation. Aaron gets more than he bargained for when the FBI partners him with a handsome and tempting deputy US marshal. His attraction to the inked up, dark-haired man provides another kind of threat altogether. Aaron tries desperately to place a firewall around his heart and fight his developing feelings, knowing one misstep on his part could ultimately destroy him.

The solution isn’t as easy as solving the case, which is treacherous enough as it is. But the growing sexual attraction between them threatens to derail more than just Kreed’s personal convictions as he quickly learns temptation and matters of the heart rarely fit easily into the rules he’s lived by. Will Kreed be able to convince Aaron to open his heart and face the fact that sometimes the answers aren’t always hidden in code?

“You’re so fucking sexy with those fuck-me-I’m-so-smart glasses on and that intense look on your face.”
Aaron glanced up and narrowed his eyes as he shoved the glasses off to the top of his head and stretched out his back. There was just something about the big, gorgeous deputy marshal growling those words at him that made his dick want to come out and play. A tired yawn from hours of sitting behind his laptop slipped free as he rubbed his eyes.
“And those noises you make are a complete turn-on.”

“I have a feeling it doesn’t take much to turn you on. A slight gust of wind would probably have you at full mast,” Aaron teased, lowering the lid to his laptop.

Best Selling Author Kindle Alexander is an innovative writer, and a genre-crosser who writes classic fantasy, romance, suspense, and erotica in both the male/male and male/female genres. It’s always a surprise to see what’s coming next!

I live in the suburbs of Dallas where it’s true, the only thing bigger than an over active imagination, may be women’s hair!
Usually, I try for funny. Humor is a major part of my life – I love to laugh, and it seems to be the thing I do in most situations – regardless of the situation, but jokes are a tricky deal… I don’t want to offend anyone and jokes tend to offend. So instead I’m going to tell you about Kindle.

I tragically lost my sixteen year old daughter to a drunk driver. She had just been at home, it was early in the night and I heard the accident happen. I’ll never forget that moment. The sirens were immediate and something inside me just knew. I left my house, drove straight to the accident on nothing more than instinct. I got to be there when my little girl died – weirdly, I consider that a true gift from above. She didn’t have to be alone.

That time in my life was terrible. It’s everything you think it would be times about a billion. I love that kid. I loved being her mother and I loved watching her grow into this incredibly beautiful person, both inside and out. She was such a gift to me. To have it all ripped away so suddenly broke me.

Her name was Kindle. Honest to goodness – it was her name and she died a few weeks before Amazon released their brand new Kindle ereader. She had no idea it was coming out and she would have finally gotten her name on something! Try finding a ruler with the name Kindle on it.. It never happened.

Through the course of that crippling event I was lucky enough to begin to write with a dear friend in the fan fiction world of Facebook. She got me through those dark days with her unwavering support and friendship. There wasn’t a time she wasn’t there for me. Sometimes together and sometimes by myself, we built a world where Kindle lives and stands for peace, love and harmony. It’s its own kind of support group. I know without question I wouldn’t be here today without her.

Title: It’s About Time
Series: Time Series #2.5
Author: B.A. Dillon

Release Date: September 2, 2015
Marriage.
A civil, social and legal institution under which two consenting adults establish a life-long relationship based on love and commitment.

Scott Wilson and Brandon Lawrence want what all their friends have – marriage, kids, and a dream kitchen in the biggest house they can afford.
The only thing stopping them – the state of Florida.
But sweeping change is on the horizon, and their story only delivers fairytale endings and happily ever afters. What the world can learn from Scott and Brandon’s story is that living in harmony is always better than living with hostility. That acceptance of people’s differences is always easier than dissension, and that love always triumphs over hate.

Chapter Two – Marry Me

“I love you,” I whisper feeling tears wanting to escape my eyes. “I’m so jealous of all of them, and I feel like the world’s worst friend because I’m thinking that way. I love Emma to death, and I’m so happy she found Luke and has a second chance at love. But with Shane and Katie expecting a baby and the romance that Mia and Isaac think they’re hiding from the world, I just feel cheated. When do we get our happily ever after?” As soon as it’s all out, I feel like shit for saying anything. Gay marriage is legal in almost half the country now, but still not here. My state still bans me from legally binding my life with Brandon. I want marriage and kids and a mortgage we can’t afford. I’m a traditionalist . . . but I’m gay. And in Florida that means I can’t marry the love of my life.
“Scott,” he pauses covering my lips with his. One long kiss that invades my brain completely chases away my sour mood. “I’m already living my happily ever after with you. We’ve made a life together, a perfect life. But I’ll jump a plane to Massachusetts tomorrow if that’s what it takes to make you happy. In my heart, we’re already joined forever. I love you.”
I’m so caught up in the moment, I have no thoughts other than him . . . me . . . marriage. The moment is perfect. Grabbing Brandon’s hand I pull him with me as I race to the water’s edge. The sun has set, but the night sky is crystal clear and blanketed with twinkling lights from thousands of stars. The moon is full and blends shadows with the darkness that creates a mood so rich with romance I truly want to get married right here – right now. I don’t care that Sierra is waiting for me in the Fiesta Rentals parking lot, wondering if I shanghaied the picnic table and 100 tiki torches. I don’t care that I’m about to lower to one knee in my very new and very expensive Tommy Bahama linen pants. The salty ocean water is surely going to destroy my new Sperrys, but I don’t care. I don’t care that Brandon is trying to hurry me along. When did he become the responsible guy and we transition roles? All I know is that I want that promise. His promise of forever. When I kneel in front of him, he smiles large and laughs as I express momentary concern over the demise of my new linen pants and brand new Sperrys.
“Brandon Lawrence, I love you. And I want to make all your dreams come true. I want marriage and kids and a dream kitchen in the biggest house we can afford. As soon as it’s legal in Florida, will you marry me?”
“Do you realize what you’ve just done to your shoes, Scott? I mean, we’re wearing brand new $160 Sperrys, man!” Dropping to the sand with me, I’m treated to a kiss that rocks my world. “And, of course I’ll marry you. We don’t have to wait for Florida, Scott. I meant what I said. I’ll get on a plane tomorrow if that’s what it takes to convince you. I want to grow old with you. I want you to believe we’ll have all that and more.”
BA Dillon is a devoted wife and mother of two grown children, and a dedicated middle school teacher. Writing has always been an outlet for Dillon as she believes words are both powerful and magical.
